Lifenote Pictures organises interactive workshops in rural communities, focusing on the fundamentals of storytelling, such as identifying compelling narratives, using visual tools like photography and video, and structuring messages for clarity and emotional impact. These workshops will be tailored to the unique cultural and economic contexts of each community, ensuring relevance and practical application.
Participants will learn how to use platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp to promote their products, services, and stories. Training will include creating engaging content, using basic graphic design tools, and understanding audience engagement strategies. Importantly, these sessions will also cover low-cost or no-cost ways to market effectively, ensuring accessibility for all.

To ensure that participants can immediately apply what they've learned, Story Lab will provide basic starter toolkits, such as smartphones, tripods, or simple editing software. These resources will empower community members to create quality content even with limited infrastructure.
After the initial training, Lifenote Pictures will establish a mentorship program where participants can access guidance from professionals in storytelling and marketing. Regular check-ins, online consultations, and a dedicated helpline will provide continued support and encouragement as they apply their new skills.
Recognizing the educational gap as a significant challenge from the outset, we adopted a participatory, hands-on approach. This method encouraged peer-to-peer learning, where facilitators (videographers/photographers) initially taught one participant how to operate and shoot with a camera. That participant would then pass on the knowledge to the next, continuing the cycle until everyone had learned. Over time, this technique helped participants become familiar with camera operations and basic storytelling techniques. The training was divided into two key sessions: theory and practical application.
Participants approached the training with curiosity and actively engaged in group activities. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, though there were notable differences in engagement levels. In Bongo District, women showed greater enthusiasm and participation than men, while in Kassena Nankana West District, women were less engaged in the learning process. At the end of each module, participants were asked to shoot a concept of their choice.
This served as a practical assessment to measure the extent to which training objectives were achieved, the relevance and applicability of the content, trainer performance, the effectiveness of the methodologies, and the usefulness of materials and logistics provided. Through this process, participants not only learned valuable skills but also demonstrated creativity and confidence in their storytelling abilities.
Overall, as a pilot program within WaterAid Ghana’s Endogenous Development framework, this workshop proved to be an invaluable initiative in empowering community members to tell their own stories through video and photo documentation. The success of this program highlighted the transformative power of storytelling in fostering creativity, building confidence, and amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities.
Inspired by the impact and outcomes of this pilot, Lifenote Pictures evolved the concept into StoryLab, a dedicated initiative aimed at extending this approach to more rural communities across Ghana. StoryLab builds on the principles of hands-on, participatory learning, providing tailored training in storytelling, content creation and social media marketing to empower individuals and small businesses. Recognizing the potential of storytelling to create social and economic opportunities, Story Lab has expanded the original framework by incorporating broader skill sets, such as social media content creation, marketing strategies, and networking support.
Through Story Lab, Lifenote Pictures aims to replicate and scale the success of the pilot program, ensuring that more individuals, regardless of their educational background, can learn to share their stories, promote their crafts, and connect with wider audiences. This evolution reflects Lifenote Pictures’ commitment to using storytelling as a tool for empowerment and sustainable community development, turning local voices into catalysts for change.
